How to Promote Your Music Online: A Plan for Indie Artists

8:42:00 AMby Arifur Rahman

You finished the song. Now comes the part most artists find harder than writing it: getting people to hear it. If you are wondering how to promote your music online without a label, a big budget or hours a day on social media, a simple plan beats doing a little of everything.

This guide walks through that plan step by step, from getting your release ready to getting it on the radio, sharing it without spamming and keeping new listeners around. Every step is something you can do yourself this week.

Step 1: Get your release ready before you promote it

Promotion multiplies what you already have. If the file sounds rough or the details are missing, more attention only means more people see the problems. Spend an hour on the basics first.

A finished, radio-ready file

Send out the final mastered version, never a demo. Export a high-quality MP3, check that the start and end are clean, and make sure nothing in the lyrics would stop a station from playing it. Our radio-ready MP3 checklist covers bitrate, tags, loudness and file size in detail.

A name that stays the same everywhere

Pick one way to write your artist name and song title, and use it on every platform, file and post. Name your file Artist Name - Song Name.mp3. On FnF.FM that file name is what listeners see as "now playing", so it is how they find you again.

Cover art and a short bio

A clear cover helps people recognise your release on a small phone screen, and a short bio tells stations and new fans who you are in a few seconds. If you need help, read our album art design tips and our guide on how to write an artist bio.

Step 2: Get your song on the radio

Streaming playlists and social feeds reward people who already follow you. Radio works the other way round: it plays your song to people who have never heard of you, at a moment when they are already listening to music. That makes it one of the most useful ways to reach new ears.

Start with free submission

FnF.FM runs three stations, English, Bangla and Hindi, around the clock for listeners worldwide. Any artist can send us music for free through the song submission form. You can send up to three MP3s at a time, each under 12 MB, with optional cover art.

Our team listens to every song. Songs we pick for free airplay are added to our directory, play once a week and also play whenever a listener requests them. They are promoted on X and Easybie too. Our step-by-step guide to submitting music to radio stations explains the form field by field.

Add paid promotion when timing matters

Free airplay is not guaranteed, and it does not follow your release date. If you are launching a single and want it heard often in its first weeks, a paid plan gives you guaranteed airplay. Plans start at $9 a week for 28 plays (four a day, every six hours), go live within 12 hours and include shares of your song title and artist name on X and Easybie. Compare every weekly, monthly and yearly option on our Music Promotion page, or read paid radio promotion vs free submission to decide.

Step 3: Share your music without spamming

Posting the same link ten times a day does not make more people listen. It makes people mute you. A few thoughtful posts do more than a flood of identical ones.

  • Tell a story with each post. Share why you wrote the song, a clip from the studio or the lyric you are proudest of. Each post gives people a new reason to press play.
  • Tell people where to hear you. When your song is on air, say so: "My new single is playing on FnF.FM Bangla this week." Then link to the station so fans can listen live.
  • Ask your fans to request it. On FnF.FM, listeners can request a song, and requested songs get played. A few genuine requests from your fans put your song in front of everyone else listening at that moment.
  • Thank people who share it. A reply or a repost costs nothing and turns a listener into a supporter.

Step 4: Keep new listeners coming back

Promotion is not only about the first listen. The listeners who hear your song on the radio and then look you up are the ones who become fans. Make that easy.

Make yourself easy to find

When someone hears a song they like, they look for it. On FnF.FM, the Recently played list shows every song that aired, so a listener can find yours later. Our guide on how to find a song you heard on the radio shows the steps. Make sure your profiles use the same name as your file, so a quick search leads straight to you.

Release regularly

One song is a start. A steady release schedule, even one song every couple of months, gives stations and fans something new to talk about and gives you a reason to promote again. Each new release can go through the same plan.

A simple music promotion checklist

  1. Export your final, mastered MP3 and name it Artist Name - Song Name.mp3.
  2. Prepare square cover art and a two-line bio.
  3. Submit your song for free at fnf.fm/submit.
  4. For a release date or a launch, choose a paid plan for guaranteed airplay.
  5. Post a few times with a story, not the same link over and over.
  6. Ask your fans to request your song while it is on air.
  7. Keep your name the same everywhere, and plan your next release.
